Ross 2nd XI 6 Lansdown C 2
ROSS on Wye men’s second XI continued their promising start to the season away to Lansdown C with a stunning 6-2 victory.
Rory Calderwood was a very deserving Man of the Match as he created assist after assist for his team mates with his dazzling ball control and increasing eye for the right pass at the right moment.
Ross started slowly, going one down in only five minutes. This is an element of their game they need to address as it is becoming something of a habit. However, with Tom Yallop added to the squad, Ross have found a genuine goal scorer, a veritable fox in the box. He scored three goals by the simple technique of coolly lining himself up and then hitting the ball very, very hard towards the opposition goal.
The trial of the shy and retiring Adrian Williams continues, although he looks like he might make a decent enough attacking midfield player on this display, accounting for two Ross’ tally. Dan Mills added the third.
The goal of the game would have been scored by Edward Peck running on to an inch perfect pass from Dan and going round the keeper to slam the ball into the empty net. Unfortunately, the reluctant centre forward heard the metaphorical ping emanating from the back of his thigh at the crucial moment and the opportunity drifted away into that twilight of might have beens that haunt all of our lives.
Ross defended their lead stoutly, with Steve Hetenyi revealing that he might have invented a whole new position: the attacking defensive midfielder. He was able to extemporise in front of the classic back three of Richard Harbottle, Tony Faulkner, and Brian Clear. In goal, James Evans was again impressive, in particular in the crucial stop he made as the game hung in the balance at 1-1.
Theo Philips was a dynamo in midfield, breaking things up as much as setting things up, and Alex Hetenyi showed that university life has not taken the edge off his athleticism.
Training takes place every Monday (Monmouth Leisure Centre) and Wednesday (John Kyrle High School) evening, starting 7pm for juniors and 8pm for adults. Anybody interested is welcome to attend, whatever your ability.
Next week Ross return for another away trip to Cheltenham, but this time in expectation of going one step further and taking all three points.
