This year's Senior Rugby XV will end this season as the most successful side to come from Monmouth Comprehensive, claiming back to back Senior Midweek League titles and successive Welsh Schools Finals.

This success has not come overnight, but as a culmination of six years' hard work and determination from not only a team of rugby players but also a group of close friends.

Tours to Italy and Ireland throughout their school life have helped develop these friendships and forged an unwavering team spirit, which has been highlighted in this year's success.

They all agree that without the input of their two coaches, Mr Penny and Mr DJ Williams, the achievements of this year would not have been possible, with their endless enthusiasm and passion spurring the boys on before, during and even after every game.

The last two seasons have seen the Senior Midweek League dominated by the MCS Sixth Form side, with convincing wins against every opposition team this season.

They have been unbeaten in seven games, scoring 317 points in the process.

MCS only conceded 25 points during the season, with only three teams able to cross their line – as a team they refused to take it easy when games were well and truly won, defending to the final whistle.

A mention must go to Will Korb and Max Senior who played in every league game this year, with Senior being the League's top point scorer, with his overall tally for the season of 72 points.

Their journey to the final of the WSSRU Plate began with the difficult task of travelling to the Cardiff Schools champions Stanwell.

Despite the unfavourable weather conditions and a below par first-half performance, Monmouth's team spirit and determination showed, grinding out a hard-fought 12-3 win.

The next round draw meant another demanding match, this time to West Wales to face Gower College where MCS emerged with a 27-0 victory.

The next side to stand in the way of MCS's tournament ambitions was a strong Tonypandy side, typical of the Rhondda Valley.

Unlike most of previous games this season, the weather, hot and sunny, suited the MCS flamboyant, free-flowing style of rugby. 35-0 was the final score – still no tries conceded in the competition. The occasion the team had been waiting for arrived.

Pontyclun RFC was the neutral venue for the biggest school game of their careers against Dyffryn Taf. A kit clash between the two sides meant a coin toss decided who would wear Pontyclun's First Team black and white kit for the match.

Monmouth's first loss of the season came from the coin toss and so they became honorary 'Badgers' for the day.

The opening 10 minutes was a cagey affair, with both defences on top and neither side giving an inch. After a Jordan Howells penalty, the MCS side began to find their feet, stringing numerous phases together in the opposition half.

From a solid forward platform, outside half Max Senior cut through what had been a water tight defence to score a brilliant opening try.

Dyffryn responded with a slow rising penalty attempt which slugged over the bar to bring the score to 10-3. The sides went in 13-3 at the break with everything still to play for.

A great claim from the kick-off by captain Cam Watson Boycott was soon followed by a moment of individual brilliance as he cleverly allowed the ball to be ripped off him.

As the Wales U18s back rower ripped the ball off Cam, he threw a speculative pass that was picked off by a grateful Jordan Howells, who ran the ball in from 50m.

This magic from Cameron contributed towards his man-of-the-match award. 20-3 MCS.

Dyffryn Taf raised their game and would have scored had it not been for the monumental defence of the whole side, in particular Joe Tingle and Will Korb, who epitomised the spirit of the whole squad.

Several changes were made without impacting on the momentum of the MCS side. The game was killed off with 15 minutes to go when scrum half Dan White scored Monmouth's third try.

The last 10 minutes were played on the Monmouth try line but, as they had done all season, they defended for the jersey and kept their record of not conceding a try in the whole tournament.

Monmouth finished 30-3 winners and the Squad were crowned Welsh Schools Champions.
