Chepstow Harriers' Paul Murrin and Vanessa Lawson won first male and female night owl trophies at Rogueruns' tough five-mile off-road night race in the Forest of Dean on Saturday 22nd March.
The course featured challenging climbs, twisting single track paths, hair-raising descents, and muddy forest trails, rounding off with an atmospheric tour of Mallards Pike Lake.
Painstaking marking with reflective tape and arrows ensured that not one competitor was lost in the woods.
Sweeper marshal, Andy Blackmore rescued one runner who was stuck in a bog, but she emerged smiling and later won a spot prize.
It was an eventful night as Chepstow Harrier, Berta Havers, spotted a pair of wild boar eyes glinting at her through the trees on her journey home. 74 hardy runners completed the course.
Other prize winners were James Smith 2nd, Jon Barnes 3rd, Patrick Woodisse 1st vet 40, Tony Marshall 1st vet 50, Neil Grant 1st vet 60, Niki Morgan 2nd, Kate Wram 3rd, Angela Jones 1st vet 40, Rosine Rowlands 1st vet 50.
The following day, 26 competitors ran the same course during the day. All those who had competed on Saturday night were given a free entry so they could have the opportunity of seeing, in the light, where they had run the night before.
Exhausted, but jubilant after two days of exertion, they were rewarded for their efforts with Clare Grant's delicious home-made cakes and tea.
Paul Drew and Fairwater's Angela Jones won the day race and were presented with beautiful hand-carved wooden squirrel trophies, crafted by the organisers.
Angela deserves a special mention for winning a prize for both events, and also for spotting a wild boar when camped overnight.
