A YEAR 12 student at Monmouth Comprehensive School has just gained his first Welsh rugby league cap.

16-year-old Harry Johnson was part of the Wales under-16 side who played North West England in August at Stebonheath Park in Llanelli.

The thrilling encounter saw Wales losing 6-28 with 15 minutes to go, but managing to turn on the Welsh magic to win 30-28.

Harry plays for Torfaen Tigers where next season he will have another opportunity to impress the Wales’ coaching staff Lee Crocks and Gareth Kear for Wales u19s.

He is a student at Monmouth Comprehensive School studying sports science and business studies but is keen to continue playing his rugby union at Monmouth RFC u17s.

Harry was kindly sponsored by local business L M Hunter Builders, a fantastic gesture of support for the young lad as Luke Hunter is also his rugby coach.

Luke has high expectations of Harry to get recognised within rugby union. “Harry is a very high skill set player with big future in front of him” said Luke.

Harry is also very keen to play senior rugby at Monmouth.

He would also like to say big thank you to LM Hunter builders for sponsorship, “it has allowed me to play in a professional environment representing my country,” he said.
