Monmouth RFC's origins date back to 1873, making it one of the oldest clubs in Wales. During that time the ethos has been on community integration through sport. As we approach the last quarter of the 2011/12 season there is a feeling of optimism that our 1st and 2nd teams could both win their respective leagues. If this ambition is accomplished it would mean a return to Division 4 rugby next season.

The tough economic environment, combined with the competing needs of work-life balance, means that grass roots rugby across the nation is not immune to these challenges and as such many clubs are facing a fight for survival.

It is against this back drop that Monmouth RFC has much to cheer.

During the last decade a concerted effort to expand mini, junior and youth rugby in the town, through the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm of many volunteers and parents, has helped create an environment where children, adults and families can enjoy their social time in a friendly and positive environment, while developing sporting excellence, a feed to the senior teams and broader life skills.

Much of this has been made possible through the foresight of committee members back in the late 1960s, who took a major decision to purchase what was the Druid's Head pub and convert it into the Rugby Club, this tough decision helped provide a base from which to operate and subsequently grow. We hope as current custodians that we're able to continue their work.

There is no doubt that this approach is now having a positive impact on the field of play, reflected in the performance of all team's week in, week out across all age groups and in addition the representative honours achieved by a number of young players who are, or have been associated with the club in recent years.

Maintaining this ambition cannot be built on hard work alone, it is in this respect that we're very grateful to the long list of sponsors who continue to support the club and allow us to invest in coach development, training and playing equipment for all age groups. Without their support, large or small much of what we have achieved would not have been possible.

There are a number of up and coming events during the next few weeks that provide an opportunity to re-visit any old associations with the club, or indeed introduce yourself as a new member, playing or otherwise.

In February 2011, the Rugby Club took on a side from 1st Batallion the Rifles in memory of Rifleman Jamie Gunn, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009. The match attracted a large crowd and raised valuable funds for ABF The Soldiers' Charity. The club, hoping to make the event an annual fixture, have arranged a second game this Saturday.
