WYE world medal rowing cox Jack Tottem steered the world’s oldest club Leander to a 10th straight headship in the biggest women’s race in the world, over the reverse Boat Race course in London on Saturday.

The Old Monmothian from Devauden did the double last year – winning the Women’s 8s Head before landing the men’s equivalent, the Head of the River Race which, celebrates its century next weekend.

And he could well do so again, after landing victory at the head of a 320-strong time-trial field comprising nearly 3,000 women rowers.

Oxford’s 2022 men’s Boat Race-winning cox Jack, who coxed the GB women’s 8 to world championship bronze in Shanghai last September, steered the Leander boat over the 4 1/4-mile Chiswick to Putney Tideway course in 18 minutes 18.4 seconds to win by 8.5 seconds from University of London in second.

Hampton-based Molesey were third in 18.27.1, just under five seconds ahead of Thames RC in fourth, with Leander B fifth in 18.41.8.

Ahead of the Boat Race next month, Cambridge’s women won the University pennant in sixth in 18.43.4, although Oxford may well be favourites to turn the tide after victory the same weekend in the prestigious Heineken Head in Amsterdam.
