Raglan Football Club's annual tournament took place on Sunday 11th May and was a fitting pinnacle event for the club's successful 2013/14 season. The notion to create a bigger tournament than ever before saw the junior players of a dozen Welsh clubs en-route to Raglan, with the event running smoothly and poor weather in the vicinity being luckily dodged. Mirroring the home club's present age strengths, the tournament saw players from the age of five through to senior school age collectively play nearly 80 games of football, the number of players in action being around 250, with more than 50 of those in the home team's distinctive purple strip. Among the hundreds of spectators was a Premier League scout, while the talent on the seven pitches was also clearly matched by the cake-makers who excelled themselves leading up to the event, their produce being very well received. It is said that 'grass-roots' football has been suffering from diminishing numbers, but that is certainly not the case in Raglan, where serious consideration is presently being given to doubling the league commitment for the club from September. Also at odds with perceived convention, Raglan has a growing number of girls playing football every week, with 11 of them in action on tournament day. With activities in the East Gwent Junior Youth Association Football League now complete until the start of the new season in September, the Raglan FC training sessions are now primarily in readiness for several other local tournaments that the club has entered through to the end of June; training sessions run from 10.30am on Saturdays (excluding school holiday periods) and everyone is welcome, the club being situated in Station Road, Raglan, NP15 2EP.
