MONONES enjoyed a comprehensive victory when they played Cinderford’s Severn Sapphires last Tuesday evening (5th December).

Fern Ledger and Claire Cross played well in defence making it very difficult for Sapphires’ shooters to score. Laura Griffiths intercepted many passes in the centre court turning the flow of the game around in Monones’ favour and passing the ball onto centre Kali Jade Cross, who then swiftly moved the ball to shooter Sophie Jones who repeatedly scored. At half time Monones were leading 35–3.

Captain Mandy Davies was also on shooting form and mixed up the team trying different combinations. It wasn’t until the final quarter, following some changes, that Sapphires were finally able to score more goals, but it was too late and Monones won comfortably with the final score 58–15. With two matches to go, Monones have secured their place in the cup competition when the league divides into the cup and plate competition in February.

Meanwhile, Monthrees played Severn Stars, Cinderford’s first team. The team started well, matching the Stars goal for goal and were one down at the first quarter, 7-6. Captain Tracey Hodgson and Steph Barclay worked well in the shooting circle, popping the ball into the goal from near and far. Following the Christmas break, centre Lizzie Bennett was keen to play and was everywhere, linking well in defence and attack.

Emma Lane made her debut for the team and normally a shooter was unsure about playing wing attack but did well against the more experienced opposition.

The team also welcomed back Hilary Phillips, following a long break with illness and work commitments. But, despite Sally Price and Helen Bennetts efforts to curtail the Stars’ shooters, goal attack Tracy Frankland was on fire and together with their superb goal shooter pulled away in the second half of the game to win 41-17. Monthrees have steadily improved but now need to improve on their overall fitness to sustain their play throughout their matches.
