Monnow Swimming Club took part in the Cardiff Bay Sprint Meet on 12th July alongside 22 other swimming clubs across South and West Wales. Eleven competitors aged between 10 and 13 swam in a number of events in the International Pool in Cardiff. For many it was their first experience of an Olympic-sized pool. Undaunted by the 50m distance, the team performed exceptionally well, achieving personal bests in nearly every race. Swimmers could enter 50m events in each of the four strokes in two categories based on previous best times. The top 10 in each age group based on finishing positions in the 50m events were then eligible to compete in the 200m Individual Medley. The swimmers won a grand total of 15 medals and seven much coveted 'speeding tickets' were awarded for swimming faster than quickest time allowed for this level of competition. Lucy Creasey, Matt Ford, Ben Smith and Rosie Boiling swam consistently well and qualified for the individual medleys. Lucy won four silvers and a bronze in her events. Sophia Swell and Louise Sadler won gold medals in the B category while Ben won gold in the 50m backstroke A category. Katie Cameron, Caitlin Livingston, Oliver Riba Fookes, Sam Finighan and Dougal Lemon all swam personal bests against strong competition. "I am so proud of all our swimmers," said head coach Jane Sambrook. "For a small club like Monnow to win so many medals is brilliant."
