Chepstow's Marriot St Pierre Golf Club is hoping to mark its 50th anniversary by winning The Lombard Challenge, a PGA Pro-Captain Tournament in Turkey at the end of the month.

Captain Jim Cook will team up with PGA professional Craig Dun who reached last year's final and has twice finished runner-up in the event.

The pair will compete against nine other UK clubs in the £25,000 grand final being staged at Antalya Golf Club's PGA Sultan Course from 30th November to 1st December. The course recently hosted the World Golf Finals where both Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were among the field.

Cook, who plays off nine and is a retired chartered surveyor, believes the club could hardly have marked their half-century any better than to achieve back-to-back Lombard final appearances.

"You don't get to pick your year as captain, so I've been fortunate to have 2012 as mine and we've held a number of events to celebrate the anniversary," he said.

"This time last year, we were saying that a great way to start the year would be taking part in the Lombard Challenge and 12 months on, here we are again."

The pair made it to the final after winning their qualifying event at Cumberwell Park Golf Club in Wiltshire in August.

Cook, 62, feels last year's experience will be invaluable.

"I'm good friends with last year's captain Alan Beach so he's been able to fill me in on what's it's going to be like out there," he added.

Dun, 40, who also finished second when the event was staged in Bahrain in 2008, will arguably be the fittest competitor on action.

"Away from golf, I've run nine marathons in four different countries," said Dun.

"I also ran an ultra-marathon in Dartmoor. It was 34 miles and I never stopped, it took me six hours and I'll never do it again.

"That was six years ago and I turned 40 this year, which is why I'm starting to look after my body a bit more now.

"So I'm doing more cycling now and I'm looking to build up to actually racing at some point."

He added: "It's been a busy year for the club, Jim's had a big year and this'll be the pinnacle of it.

"Before you qualify, you're not really under much pressure to get to the final but once you get there, you want to go back.

"And after coming second in both my previous appearances, it'd be nice to go one better if possible."

Andy Hart, managing director of large corporate and specialist asset finance company, Lombard, commented: "There has been some truly fantastic golf over the course of the tournament so far.

"That includes a hole in one at John O'Gaunt Golf Club, Bedfordshire, and we look forward to welcoming all the regional finalists for what we expect to be another thoroughly enjoyable grand final at the PGA Sultan in Antalya, Turkey.

"It's really great to support a tournament that has such a positive impact on the relationship between the PGA professional and his club captain, and working with the PGA to help build these relationships is rewarding for us.

"We wish all the finalists the best of luck, and a big thank you again to the PGA team for putting together such a fantastic event."
