Tredegar Town 0 – Monmouth Town 1
A 90th minute strike by the indefatigable Nick Harrhy, after superb work by Dan MacDonald and Luke Cleaves, clinched a cup final day out for Monmouth Town as they seek to win the Gwent Senior Cup for the first time since 1940.
Coincidently, Luke Cleaves' great grandfather skippered the side that lifted the trophy in the early years of the Second World War, and the way Town started he could probably have got a game here.
Tredegar, who are fighting for promotion to Division 2, were more than a match for the Welsh League champions on a good surface in the Gwent Senior Cup semi-final, and had the better of the early exchanges as Monmouth looked decidedly nervy with an unfamiliar back three line up.
Goalkeeper Matthew Johns was called into action a couple of times having been put under pressure by his own defence, although Town carved out a few openings of their own.
The Kingfishers were fortunate to go in at half time level pegging as Tredegar smashed the bar and fluffed a couple of other promising situations while Town struggled to play with any real dominance.
Monmouth came out much brighter in the second half as Tredegar maybe left a little bit in the dressing room and looked a little tired after their exertions in the first 45 minute.
Elliot Ford was getting a bit more joy down the right hand side while Elliot Evans (pictured having a shot saved) probed away. MacDonald showed in flashes why he is such a force at this level, Harrhy kept plugging away as the defence held firm and Jack Alderdice was superb again.
As the game entered its final stages Johns had to be alert to pull of a fine stop down to his right and couple of chances went begging as the nerves began to shred.
Up stepped MacDonald who had threatened a number of times to have the final word, and it was his strike that was half saved by the home keeper.
Harrhy, who was following up, still had plenty to do but drilled his finish low into the far corner in the final minute. Remarkably Tredegar still had time to hit the bar from a corner as they pushed for the equaliser deep into injury time.
The Kingfishers had shown their quality when it mattered and now face Goytre FC in the final at Undy Athletic on Saturday 16th May.
