Goals from Dan MacDonald and Nick Harrhy were enough to see Monmouth Town's Kingfishers through to the second round of the Welsh Cup in a tight game at Porth's Ynys park.

The home side started by far the better, causing consternation in the Town's defence with corners and crosses whizzing across Keiron Blackburn's penalty box as the visitors struggled to get into the game.

With Ben Evans restored to the side at left back for his first start for five months, Town should have been more adept at clearing their lines but as Evans settled so did the team and slightly against the run of play MacDonald fired in a sweet curling free kick from 25 yards.

Attempts on goal were at a premium and just before half time Lee was harshly adjudged to have brought Josh Owen inside the penalty area and Shane Davies gave Blackburn no chance with his spot kick.

Moments later Blackburn again had to be on his mettle as he superbly blocked a one-on-one and a goal apiece was a fair reflection of the game at half-time.

In the second half Town seemed more at ease with themselves and looked more threatening as a result.

Ford was a having a better game and was unlucky not to have earned a penalty after a blatant shove, but it was Nick Harrhy who sealed the win, stealing in on the end of a great cross from Elliot Evans to tap in at the far post with an hour gone.

MacDonald had the chance to make the supporters more comfortable as he crashed another free kick against the post and could only watch as it rebounded across the goal line and out to safety.

Despite promising situations Town looked a bit leggy in attack and couldn't press home any advantage.

Porth for their part, although never really out of the running, lacked a cutting edge to create anything of note to trouble Blackburn and Town settled for the narrow win to look forward to this week's cup draw.

Town, sponsored by WyeMedia and Raduni restaurant, have no game this weekend but are back in home action on 26th October when they welcome Ton Pentre at the start of the 'Show Racism the Red Card' week of action (kick off 2pm).
