JACK Walby made his competitive driving debut at the "Get it Sideways" Stages held at the Down Ampney driving a Citroen C2.

Walby has been co-driving since the age of 16, but the 21 year old from Broadwell is focused on doing a few rallies as a driver this year.

Cheltenham Motor Club's event saw the debut of the newly built C2, which they hope will be able to do the remaining rounds of the Gwynnespeed C2 Challenge if extra funding can be found.

A full entry of 75 cars lined up for the 50 miles of action on the notoriously slippery tarmac of the old WW2 airfield, including 11 C2 challenge cars.

Sitting alongside the youngster was the experienced Mark Watkins, a very accomplished driver in his own right, who will be helping with Walby's development as the year progresses.

The duo had a very good day with Walby getting quicker over each run, despite losing 30 seconds on stage two with a high speed off, but they eventually finished 44th overall, 5th in the C2 Challenge.

"Its been a big learning curve for me today, but its great to be able to get behind the wheel.

"We only finished the car at 2am this morning (Saturday 4th April) so we're all a bit tired now, but its been a very good event thanks to all the organisers, officials and marshalls," said Walby.

"I've lots of people to thank for their help and time and helping me prepare the car."

Jack's father Martyn said: "The C2 Challenge was the way for us to go as the cars are pretty standard, cheap to run, and a good mix of rallies."
