TWENTY three Spirit of Monmouth runners strode out in the second Gwent Leisure Centre League (GLCL) road race of 2022, reports SARAH CLIFTON.

They joined 427 runners from nine other local clubs for the 5.15-mile race near Tredegar, including Wye Valley neighbours Chepstow Harriers.

The race was hosted by Parc Bryn Bach RC, which sits just off the Heads of the Valleys road and can sometimes feel like an exposed location.

But midsummer lived up to it’s name and it was a stunning hot and sunny evening to enjoy the views.

The course consisted of a loop around the hilly golf course, a lap of the lake and another loop of the golf course to finish.

The GLCL races attract a range of runners from the very fastest club runners to those who find the runs much more challenging, with finishing times ranging from 27 minutes to just under 1 hour 12 minutes.

Harriers Tim Batchelor was fastest from the two local clubs, finishing 14th in 28.00, 2.47 behind Parc Bryn Bach winner Dan Bodman.

Club mate Jon Carter was 34th in 30.21, seven seconds back on fastest woman Sandra Chipper of Lliswerry.

Paul Dodd just behind in 30.35 was fastest over-60 man, shading fellow Harrier Doug Briggs - third fastest over-50 - by four seconds, and club mates Anthony Marshall by eight and David Wheeler by 49.

The evergreen Niki Morgan was third fastest lady and quickest over-55 woman in 31.32, 24 seconds up on Harriers Sarah Bell who was second fastest over-40 lady.

Fastest Spirit of Monmouth man Brian Evans finished in 37.30 and the fastest woman was Olivia Farrington in 37.39.

The GLCL awards prizes at the end of the season to both the fastest individuals and the fastest teams, with the latter consisting of the fastest eight finishers for each club.

Harriers men’s team of Tim Batchelor, Jon Carter, Paul Dodd, Doug Briggs, Tony Marshall, David Wheeler, Jamie Goddard and Andy Hughes placed fourth with 4.05.18.

The women’s team of Niki Morgan, Sarah Bell, Cherry Fowler, Jane Roscoe, Kim Carwaradine, Jan Morris, Becky Fullerton and Ruth Richardson were also fourth in 4.50.37.

The Spirit of Monmouth women’s team of Olivia Farrington, Lucy MacDonald, Emily Harrison, Marina Wright, Rachel Waters, Vicky Roberts, Abbie Buckley, and Linsey Holt, were very happy to finish in fifth place with a combined time of 5.28.15.

The men’s team of Brian Evans, Matthew Styles, Jonathan Davies, Robert Nelson, David Mather, Chris Baber, Andy Clifton and Jeremy Creasey, finished ninth with a combined time of 5.20.19.

The club was also proudly represented by Stephen McMenemy, Andrew Hillis, Steve Reason, Alison McMenemy, Rod Wyatt, Sarah Clifton and David Rutter.

Every runner was given a hero’s welcome at the finish as their team mates lined the final stretch to cheer them in.

Runners were aiming to maintain the momentum and improve their individual and team positions in last night’s third race (Tuesday, July 5) at Pontypool Park.
