DULL and increasingly drizzly conditions did not dampen spirits on Chepstow Racecourse's Ladies Night, where the going was good to firm.
Before the main programme, a race for Arab horses over 1 mile and 4 furlongs was won by Kamikaze by about a length from Jumeira Palm. The trainer was Wiltshire-based Adam Newey and Page Fuller was the successful jockey.
The first thoroughbred race was for two-year-olds. Brian Meehan's Tawdheef (9/4 fav) needed all of the six furlongs to get into top gear but he could be called the winner before he passed Dodgy Bob in the last 50 yards.
With Dane O'Neill on board he stayed on well to finish half a length ahead.
Forever Popular was very popular both before and after the 1m4f fillies' maiden. The 4/11 favourite, from the in-form William Haggas stable, ran on steadily from three out and hit the front entering the final furlong, with Pat Cosgrave riding her out to a one length win over Mill Springs.
It was a similar tale for the winner of the 1m2f handicap, Priors Brook (11/10 fav). He too made progress from three out and took the lead a furlong out for a hard-earned length and a quarter success over Evervescent, with Arantes making late headway in third. Liam Keniry rode the winner for Andrew Balding.
Gwent trainer Dai Burchell was responsible for the winner of the 1m fillies' handicap, Prim And Proper (5/1). She was always going well on the near side and Rab Havlin waited till approaching the final furlong before sending her through a gap. She then streaked away to a five length win over Rough Courte.
Next came a 7f handicap and a triumph for Living Leader (7/2), who made all under Martin Dwyer, who was riding for Monmouthshire trainer Grace Harris.
Two lengths ahead at halfway, he stepped up the pace gradually and his rivals never got any closer until the shadow of the post.
One of Classic-winning trainer Roger Charlton's lesser lights, Captain Marmalade, appeared in the 6f maiden handicap and obliged at odds of 4/1. Held up early by Pat Dobbs, he made good progress through the field before challenging Spirit of Wedza with a hundred yards to go and running on for a half length victory.
Medburn Cutler's good course form entitled him to go off at 10/11 in the 2m handicap that brought the meeting to a close. Backers of the Paul Henderson-trained favourite had little cause for concern as Franny Norton brought him alongside the long-time leader Eshtyaaq two out and urged him on to a length and a half success.
