A SUPERB 91 from Josh Grey inspired Monmouth Cricket Club to a four-wicket win in a high-scoring battle at bottom-of-the-table Machen. In reply to Machen's 280-7 from 50 overs, Grey led Monmouth's reply and was backed up by former Lydney batsman Aubrey Stubbs (51) and Tej Saran (39) as the hosts reached the target in 47.4 overs. Machen belied their lowly league position and Monmouth skipper Ben Turner was relieved his men chalked up their fifth consecutive triumph. Monmouth, sponsored by JD Wetherspoon, remain third in the Thomas, Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League Division Three table after their first double of the campaign. Turner's men host second-bottom Llantwit Fardre at the Sports Ground this Saturday, 1pm start. Neil Smith (1-24 from 10 overs) was Monmouth's most frugal bowler in last Saturday's match against struggling Machen. Jonathan Jones bagged 3-33 from 10, while Saran took 2-66 and Turner picked up a wicket but the visitors were off-colour in the field with Dev Singh (94) taking the plaudits for Machen. Gareth Jones blasted 88 for the hosts in their impressive total, while Smith, Matt Lovett, Grey and Jon Despontin all held catches. After the interval, in-form Grey, who is the leading run-scorer in the division, shared a vital 141-run second-wicket stand with Stubbs which set up Monmouth's challenge. Grey was dismissed just nine runs short of a merited century, after an excellent 89-ball knock, and Stubbs was run out after completing his maiden first-team fifty for the club. Lovett (21 from 23 balls) and Saran kept Monmouth ahead of the run-rate before Jonathan Jones (13 not out) and Alim Hansraj (10 not out) steered the visitors' home with just 14 balls remaining. Martin Newell's outstanding unbeaten 95 guided Monmouth's 2nd team to a five-wicket home win over Machen 2nd in 2nd XI Division Three. After Machen 2nd had posted 179-6 from 45 overs, man-of-the-match Newell starred and was supported by Steve Morgan (35) and Reuben Collin (19) as Monmouth swept home with six balls remaining. Earlier, Aled Jones (1-16 from nine overs), Richard Shaw (1-32 from eight), Newell (1-36) and Luke Bowley (1-42) took wickets to limit Machen 2nd on another excellent pitch at the Sports Ground. Owain Keane (53) and Dale Stibbs (37) were the leading run-makers for a spirited Machen, while Harry King, Rick Parkes and George Williams worked hard in the outfield for Monmouth. Meanwhile, Monmouth youth star Ben Davies took 4-20 in Gwent Under-12s match against Devon Under-12s at Monmouth Sports Ground last Sunday. And Lee Herring's Wales Under-15 girls will be facing their Gloucestershire counterparts in the ECB competition at Monmouth Cricket Club next Monday. The match is at Monmouth Sports Ground and will be starting at noon. Monmouth Cricket Club will now be hosting Wales Under-14 boys against Dorset Under-14s in the ECB competition on Sunday 3rd August starting at 11.30am.
