CHEPSTOW'S spring afternoon racing meeting on Tuesday 19th May began in sunny conditions, though showers came along, with the going soft.

The first race was a five furlong maiden for two-year-olds. From the Ralph Beckett yard, the well-backed Another Boy (6/4 fav) disputed the lead with Field Of Vision until being nudged into the lead by Pat Dobbs just over a furlong out.

Without undue pressure being applied he won by a length and a half with a little up his sleeve, the pair pulling clear of the rest.

Major Mac was odds on for the one mile four furlong handicap, and he made most of the running.

Once he was asked for an effort he could only plug on at one pace when Honour Promise (20/1) surged past with just over a quarter of a mile to go.

She soon went four lengths clear under William Twiston-Davies. The winning trainer was William Muir.

The original favourite Gran Maestro was withdrawn at the start of the 1m2f handicap.

The rank outsider Abyaat took the lead two out and was soon two lengths up. Oskar Denarius came out of the pack and, without looking completely enthusiastic, gradually gained ground, but was a short head down at the winning post.

However, the stewards disqualified Abyaat for edging to the right during the finish, taking his opponent with him, and promoted Oskar Denarius (the 3/1 favourite in a reformed market) to first place. Shane Kelly rode him for Marcus Tregoning.

In the one mile maiden Alcatraz (11/8 fav) took the lead two out and won convincingly under Pat Cosgrave.

He hung left throughout the closing stages, doing Niblawi no favours, but the margin of victory was over two lengths and this was sufficient to preclude the need for a stewards' enquiry.

This recent acquisition to George Baker's stable could be Royal Ascot-bound.

A handicap over a mile resulted in a close finish. Ridden by David Probert and trained by Patrick Chamings, Double Czech (4/1) shared the lead for much of the way.

He rallied after being headed by Breakheart two out and regained the lead inside the final furlong.

Belle Park finished fast and late on the outside with what appeared to be a winning run, but the photo showed she failed by a short head.

In the 6f handicap Bonjour Steve (6/5 fav) appreciated the soft ground and followed up his win at Newcastle last week.

Tom Marquand drove him past the leader Noverre To Go a furlong out and score by two lengths.

The horse's Chepstow record is 2221, so his Herefordshire trainer Richard Price may look for another race for him here.

Two two-mile handicaps brought the card to a close. In the first Tom Marquand completed a quick double, piloting Sail With Sultana (16/1) to victory by a head.

The Mark Rimell-trained filly needed all her stamina to overhaul course regular Tijori, being ridden from a long way out and only hitting the front in the last fifty yards.

In the second division, Paul Henderson's Medburn Cutler (3/1) had won here on similar going over an even longer trip and once he took the lead half a mile out the result was not in doubt.

Franny Norton pushed him ten lengths clear inside the final furlong. From that point he coasted home and Lead Burn got to within a length at the winning post.
