A YOUNG Chepstow boxer has rounded off his first competitive season with a Great Britain Schools bronze medal.
Wales champion Kayd Dean, 13, lost to his Scottish opponent Jason Duffy by a split decision in the semi-final at the Wales Institute of Sport in Cardiff.
Steve Woods, head coach at Chepstow Boxing Club where Kayd trains, said he was “massively proud” of the youngster’s achievement.
“He boxed exceptionally well against Duffy who is older and more experienced,” said Woods.
“The Scottish champion was clearly the stronger of the two boxers but Kayd used his boxing skill to great effect.
“The bout ebbed and flowed and by the final bell it was really hard to split them. There were five judges, three gave the bout to Duffy and two to Kayd so it really was very close.
“As his coach, I am massively proud of this young man.
“In his first competitive season of boxing, to reach the semi final is a great achievement and taking into account his Hull box cup gold medal, his Bristol box cup silver medal and his Welsh open title this has been a very impressive start to his boxing career.”
Kayd will now take a well-deserved rest until the club starts full training at the end of August.
But there could still be more success for the club as Pat Mullane is set to box in a European tournament in Serbia later this month.
