Monmouth Town's Kingfishers have moved quickly to fill their vacant managerial position by appointing former Welsh international Steve Jenkins as their first team manager.

Merthyr-born Jenkins (41) made more than 500 football league appearances, starting out at Swansea City in 1990 before going on to captain Huddersfield Town and latterly represent Swindon Town after a loan spell at Birmingham City.

He made a number of appearances for Cardiff City and Peterborough United and was capped 16 times by Wales, playing in European and World Cup campaigns from 1995 to 2001 alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs, Gary Speed and current Welsh manager Chris Coleman.

He finished his playing career with 83 games for Newport County before joining forces with fellow international Andy Legg at Llanelli as assistant player manager, together winning the Welsh Premier title in 2010, the Welsh Cup in 2011 and playing European competition for four years.

A delighted club chairman Lee Robson said: "I could do the usual flannel about being sure Steve will take us up a notch etc, but I think that's self evident.

"The challenge for us is to match his ambitions.

"We've got great people around the club who can and will step up to the plate."

The Kingfishers are also on the lookout for a senior football secretary to step in for Tim Barnard who will be concentrating on securing the finance and facilities to help the club achieve their Welsh Premier ambitions.
