Two goals from Elliot Ford were the highlight of a comfortable Welsh Cup win for the Kingfishers which secured their place in the last 32 of the Welsh FA Cup, where potentially they could b drawn against Welsh Premier teams who enter the competition at this stage.
On this form they will fear no-one as they stretched their unbeaten record to 11 games with all of their strikeforce getting goals in a below par performance but one which didn't need to scale the heights of skill on a day that would be more rewarding of endeavour and ambition.
Nick Harrhy got the scoring underway on 14 minutes, looping a soft shot toward goal which the home keeper made a hash of, allowing it to drop inside the far post.
It was a soft goal for Newbridge to concede, especially as they had set out very defensively hoping to hit on the counter but it did at least make the game more open for the rest of the half, particularly when against the run of play the Kingfishers conceded a soft one of their own.
A small amount of enterprise was enough to earn the goal as again a cross-cum-shot floated over Blackburn but clattered off the far post back onto the startled 'keeper and in for the equaliser on 32 minutes.
Newbridge were back in and with a little more composure might have made more of their undoubted abilities.
As it was it was MacDonald who once again showed his quality with a composed accurate finish just before half-time to put Monmouth, sponsored by WyeMedia, in the driving seat.
In the second half the tide began to turn inexorably Monmouth's way as pressure mounted as they dominated possession and with Harrhy, MacDonald and Ford leading the home defence a merry dance.
A sweeping move put in Ford, who smashed home his first from close range on 63 minutes. Eight minutes later it was Ford again who seized on a cross by Sam Palmer after a run that was silkier than a puppy's ears.
With Smith now on for Laurie, and Ashley Ford on at right back, Town kept the ball better and Smith particularly was relishing the conditions and the fact that he was playing against some former students.
It was the third substitute Liam Head, on for MacDonald, who completed the scoring with a crisp low drive in the final minute.
Meanwhile, a Craig Lewis hat-trick, his third in his last five games, was enough to maintain the reserve team's 100 per cent league record as they beat Cwmbran Celtic 5-2 at the Sports Ground.
This Saturday the Kingfishers return to the Sports Ground for the first of five consecutive home games looking to keep the pressure on the leaders with a clash with Gwent rivals Caerleon (2pm kick off), who were promoted with the Town last season.
It will be a particularly interesting clash as it pits Town 'keeper Blackburn and centre half Evans against their old team mates with only bragging rights up for grabs at this stage of the season. Caerleon lie 12th in the division, Monmouth fifth.
On Saturday 24th November, the Kingfishers, with match day catering supplied by the Raduni Restaurant, are fielding substitutes of a different kind hosting Mod covers band The Substitutes, who recently supported Bruce Foxton's From The Jam in Cardiff.
The gig starts at 8pm and tickets are only £5 with a free pint on entry and available from Les at Car Care in Monnow Street or at the club itself.
