Gill Cup Final - Caldicot Town 1 Underwood 2 (after extra time)

VIOLENCE once again shamed local football last week when the Gill Cup Final, held at Caldicot Town’s Jubilee Park ground, ended in ugly scenes.

After an often tense and niggly match was decided by a hotly-disputed penalty award, players and supporters from both sides clashed after fireworks and a beer glass were thrown into a group of spectators, forcing East Gwent Senior League officials to cancel the award of medals and the Gill Cup until the situation improved.

The presentation ceremony was held later, in the lounge of Caldicot Town’s social club,

An EGSL official has since confirmed both clubs have been reported to Gwent FA.

Earlier, Caldicot Town had taken the lead by Tony Morley and thanks to their keeper Louis Randle and they held the lead until the second half when Kyle Harrison equalised.

Despite both teams having chances, Randle and his opposite number Taylor Carey kept the score level to take the match into extra time.

After a goalless first period, the game erupted when Underwood were awarded a harsh penalty which Josh Downing converted despite Randle’s efforts.

With Town’s goalkeeping coach offering advice from the sidelines, Randle stood tall and waited for Downing to strike before diving to his left.

But despite getting a hand to the ball, he could only direct it into the net.

Randle was later named man of the match.
