SEVERN Tunnel maintained their promotion bid with a 6-1 victory at Undy Athletic and now trail leaders Mathern Reserves A, who they are due to visit on Saturday, by just three points.
In other matches, Tintern Abbey enjoyed an 8-2 home win over Chepstow Athletic and Thornwell Red and White won 4-1 at Caldicot Town while Severn Bridge’s match against Underwood SC was postponed.
Thornwell manager Terry Woodward said his team had done well despite being short of players.
“We didn’t start too well with a depleted side yet again,” he said.
“Town had a couple of good chances saved by Dan Northey early on but we played our way into it with some good passing football.
“We went ahead through Tony Reynolds whose looping cross went straight in then let them back into it.
“We gave the ball away in our own half but Dan made a good save only for it to drop to their winger for an easy finish.
“We dominated after the break and could have had a couple more. Kenny Vidler scored with a cool finish after Tony Reynolds put him through and added a close-range header a little later.
“Tom Chappell hit the fourth from 20 yards to cap a good performance from us. We took our chances well which made all the difference.”
In Division Two, hat-tricks by Matt Owen and Paul Light gave Chepstow Town a 6-0 success at Thornwell Red and White B while leaders Underwood SC B won 5-0 at home to Severn Tunnel C.
Severn Tunnel B won 4-2 at Sudbrook CC and Portskewett and Sudbrook won 4-1 at Caldicot Castle B.
