East Gwent Senior League Division One
SEVERN Tunnel A lead the chasing pack in Division One on goal difference, after a 6-0 win at Severn Bridge despite Underwood’s 14-1 hammering of Caldicot Castle at the weekend.
With Mathern Reserves A heading the table with 18 points, Tunnel, Underwood and Thornwell Red and White are ready to take top spot if the leaders stumble.
Underwood host Mathern on Saturday while Tunnel entertain Caldicot Town and Thornwell are home to Castle A.
Sam Leighton, Josh Downing and Lee Ryder hit hat-tricks in Underwood A’s victory with the other goals coming from Kyle Brown (two), Alex Ryall, David Jackson and Kyle Harrison.
Thornwell boss Terry Woodward said he was glad to get the visit to Tintern’s tight ground out of the way.
“It was a very tight game and both sides had a couple of chances early on,” he said.
“We went 1-0 up through Shane Morris after a goal-mouth scramble and we should have capitalised on a few more great chances with Tony Reynolds going close twice before the break.
“The second half was much the same. Their keeper had a good day. They battled well and closed us down quickly.
“There were a few challenges which could have been more severely punished. It wasn’t a great performance but it’s three points and another clean sheet and I’m glad to get that one out the way as it’s a tight ground.”
Paul Duffield scored four goals as Undy Athletic won 6-1 at Chepstow Athletic. A goal from Luke Smith and an own goal completed what the visitors’ boss Andrew Peacock described as a comfortable win.
“Chepstow only had 11 players and they lost one of those in the second half so we were never pushed,” he said.
