Gwent County League Division Two - Mathern FC 6 Cefn Fforest 0
MATHERN FC claimed their first win of the year to boost confidence ahead of a season-defining run of games.
In the next five weeks, they face home games against second placed Spencer Youth, table toppers RTB Ebbw Vale top-half teams Ynysddu as well as visiting Neuadd Wen.
That will take them to April, which should prove to be a hectic month as the league attempts to play all of the matches that were postponed this winter.
On Saturday, against bottom club Cefn Fforest, Mathern had an opportunity to end a run of poor results and return to winning ways.
Jordan Barrett gave the home side a great start with the first goal, driving down the right flank before chipping the advancing keeper.
Further strikes by Matty Board, Elliot Greening, Ieuan Diyaolu and Mark Organ wrapped up the three points by half time but the constant drizzle had helped to churn up the middle third of the pitch and the second half saw a change of tactics.
The emphasis switched to the wings but although Mathern dominated play, some heroics by the visitors’ keeper kept the score respectable until Diyaolu notched his second with a rare header, finishing a right wing cross from Alex Watkins to complete a 6-0 victory.
