Newport Saints 0 Monmouth Town 5
MONMOUTH Town ended their 2025/26 season on a high with a 5–0 win at Newport Saints last Wednesday.
Victory gave the Kingfishers 68 points, one more than last season, but they must wait on New Inn’s remaining games to see if they can hold on to the second promotion slot behind current table toppers Newport Corinthians.
It was a tight start, with Saints creating the first chance, when Oswin Williams firing wide from the edge of the box.
The hosts ‘ Jack Beech then found space on the wing and looked through on goal until a great interception from Dan Spence.
Josh Hughes then came close for Saints, played through and beating Lloyd Watkins, only for his shot to hit the post.
Despite the early pressure, the Kingfishers grew into the game, and a free-kick played short by Dan Macdonald saw Jake Bevan try his luck with a long-range effort that didn’t trouble keeper Nathan Florence.
But the breakthrough came after pressure high up the pitch from Robbie Atkinson, Taylor Street breaking free on the left, cutting inside and finding Macdonald, who slotted past Florence for 1–0.
Despite conceding a dangerous free-kick late in the half, the Kingfishers turned around in front.
And the second half saw a much-improved Monmouth performance, with their second goal arriving on 63 minutes when Brad Phillips delivered into the box for Spence to tap past Florence for 2-0.
Minutes later, Lucas Harris added a third, capping a memorable day after also winning the Newport Schools Cup with Monmouth Comprehensive School.
Another strong run from Street found Macdonald, whose shot was saved only for the rebound to fall straight to Harris to calmly finish for 3-0.
Things got worse for Saints when Mason Quigley was sent off just a minute after coming on, reducing them to ten.
And with fresh legs off the bench, Monmouth made the advantage count as David Elworthy grabbed two more goals.
The fourth came from a Phillips free-kick into the box, Rob Laurje rising to head across goal and Elworthy at the far post nodding home.
A Phillips’ long-range effort was then saved, but the ball fell to Ebrima Ndure, who squared it to Elworthy for a simple finish and 5-0.
Monmouth Town 2nds picked up a last match point at Caldicot Castle in East Gwent Division 1 in an action-packed 3-3 draw.
The visitors started the more dominant, Oliver Kennedy played through in front of goal, but firing just over, before Lamin Ndure scored the opener on 13 minutes, Harry Bailey making a great run to find Elworthy who fed the striker out wide to fire home from distance.
But Castle’s Sean Marsh equalised on the half-hour before Joel Longhurst put the hosts in front 10 minutes later.
Kennedy drew Town back level though before the end of the half, holding off pressure from defenders in the box to make it 2-2.
And just four minutes into the second period, Callum Wilding pressed forward before laying it off to Ndure who again netted from range for 3-2.
Harry Wilson then replaced Wilding before Scott Greaney replaced Liam Hughes.
But in the 82nd minute, Castle’s captain Marsh netted again for 3-3 and a draw.
The next major Monmouth Town FC event will be the Junior Tournament (June 25-26).
