MONMOUTH Town continued their perfect start to the Gwent Premier League season with a 4-1 win away at Marshfield.

That followed a 3-0 midweek victory at Sifil in Newport, making it three wins from three at the start of the new campaign.

Two magic free-kicks from Dan Macdonald, alongside goals from Lucas Harris and Mitchell Palmer, proved the difference in a thrilling match at Marshfield Village Hall.

It was a frantic start, with the opening goal coming in the 12th minute through Monmouth’s No 10 when the Kingfishers won a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Macdonald stepped up to take the set-piece, cooly placing the ball into the bottom-left corner to open the scoring.

And just two minutes later, Lucas Harris doubled the lead with a great header for his first goal of the season.

Callum Uttley made the most of a throw-in rebounding back to him, crossing the ball back into the box to find his fellow teammate and provide the perfect start for Town.

To make matters worse for Marshfield, one of their players was sin-binned for dissent, forcing the hosts to temporarily play with 10 men.

And another perfect free-kick from Macdonald in the 21st minute then made it 3-0, giving the Kingfishers a strong buffer with less than a quarter of the game played.

The half-time whistle brought an end to a feisty but strong first half for Town, who looked to keep the momentum going in the second period.

Just seven minutes into the second half, Marshfield were reduced to 10 men again – this time permanently – after Regan Rowlands was shown a straight red card.

But against the odds, the hosts got a goal back three minutes later through a great strike from captain Billy Evans.

The hosts’ momentum continued and they then won a penalty in the 60th minute, giving them a golden opportunity to put pressure on the visitors’ lead.

However, striker Dale Morgan missed from the spot, dealing a massive blow to Marshfield’s hopes of getting anything from the game.

And Monmouth’s fourth and final goal came through a long-range strike from Mitchell Palmer on 72 minutes, sending the team into jubilant celebrations as the three-goal buffer was restored and the win seemingly secured.

The Kingfishers saw out the game to make it three wins from three at the start of the 2026/27 league campaign, as they top the table heading into a double header of cup matches.

At Sifil in midweek, Macdonald set up Taylor Street to put them in front on 34 minutes.

And then a two-goal blast from the No 10 on 47 and 51 minutes made it 3-0.

Sifil then suffered a red card on 63 minutes and the Kingfishers comfortably saw the game out to take all three points.

Monmouth Town 2nds also enjoyed a 5-3 win in their pre-season friendly away to Caerleon side River Usk on Saturday.

A hat-trick from Olly Kennedy and goals from Harry Williams and Theo Haycock proved the difference.

The 1sts were due to play Brynmawr United away last night (Tuesday, August 18) in the Gwent Premier League County Motors Challenge Cup after the Beacon went to print.

They then travel to Taffs Well on Saturday in the second qualifying round of the FAW Welsh Cup, before visiting Clydach Wasps in the league the following Tuesday (August 25).
