CHEPSTOW Town leapfrogged county derby hosts Caldicot Town at the top of the Ardal South East League after clattering the Swans 3-0.

In the division's most anticipated match of the weekend, the top two came head to head with four wins each from their last five league games.

The 222 in attendance at Jubilee Way didn't have to wait long for excitement and it came from a predictable source, as Chris Ham scored his 11th of the season in the ninth minute to give the Jockeys the lead, heading home Mike Murphy’s cross.

And the Ardal SE Golden Boot winner was at it again in the 21st minute, doubling his tally from close range after another dangerous delivery into the box.

That was the score at the break before early in the second half Iestyn Davies got the Jockeys’ third to make it a canter to victory and top spot.

Manager Marc Ingles said of Ham: "He’s a cheat code. To be fair, he was struggling with a hamstring today, but a goal does wonders for the injuries, I think.”

Chepstow neighbours Thornwell R&W were also celebrating after winning a penalty shootout in a Gwent Amateur Cup thriller at home to Aberbargoed Buds.

The hosts led 2-0 early on after goals from Toby Prettyjohn (10) and Ieuan Evans (18), but Buds were level before half-time.

The visitors then took the lead with 12 minutes to play before Evans made it 3-3 with six minutes left.

A Buds fourth on 88 minutes looked to have decided it, but a penalty four minutes into stoppage time saw Evans cooly step up to equalise and claim his hat-trick.

The tie then went to penalties with more drama as the hosts won through 5-4.

Chepstow visit Caerphilly Athletic in the Welsh Cup this Saturday, while Thornwell host Newbridge Town in Gwent Premier 2.
