Gwent County League Division Two Clydach Wasps 4 Mathern FC 2

MATHERN FC travelled to take on Clydach Wasps without five of their regular side and found the home side in good form.

Manager Colin Jeffery drafted in Mark Palmer to take over the keeper’s jersey for the unavailable Jacob Tyson while recent performances by Ieuan Diyaolu, Alex Watson, Harry Johnstone and Dan Tyler playing for Mathern Reserves in East Gwent Senior League Division One earned them call-ups.

Wasps took an early lead but on 35 minutes Mark Organ latched onto a great pass from Diyaolu to equalise.

However, a quickly taken free kick left Mathern disorganised and Wasps went into the break 2-1 up.

They increased that to 3-1 soon after the restart before Dan Williams made it 3-2 from 25 yards.

His joy was short-lived as he was red-carded within minutes for a dangerous tackle and with Wasps 4-2 ahead soon after, Organ limped off with all subs on the pitch, leaving nine-man Mathern to see out the match without further goals.

Jeffery said he was impressed with the players who filled the gaps in his squad.

“It will make team selection in the future, even more difficult,” he said later.
