A CHEPSTOW footballer will be pulling on the Welsh Dragon shirt in a couple of weeks’ time to lead his country at the European six-a-side championships.

Rory Garey will be heading off to Croatia as part of the squad who are bidding for glory at the 32 team championships to be held in the coastal city of Vrsar.

The defender came through trials and training and has had to compete with hundreds of others from around the country for the coveted slot.

Those trials took place up and down the country and were organised by the United Kingdom Football Association (UKMA). Now that the squad is selected, UKMA national teams director Pete Mitchell says the player thoroughly deserves his spot on the plane.

“Competition was fierce, but Rory has impressed everyone with his skill and commitment in training, we are sure he will be worthy addition.”

It is the third time Rory has played for Wales at European Championships – his second tournament as captain.

Garey will join a Wales squad who are also making their third appearance at the European Championships. They have had some mixed results so far, but did manage their first point with a 2-2 draw against Bulgaria in Montenegro 2014.

They kick off their campaign with a tough looking game against Germany on Tuesday 22nd September at 3pm UK time.
