MONMOUTH Cricket Club's under-9's winning streak came to an end on Sunday morning, with defeat away to table-topping Colwall.

Despite the loss, Monmouth took a lot of positives from the game, with coach Liam Stubbs praising the positive strides made by less experienced players such as Raphael Cackett and Megan Maguire.

After losing the toss and being asked to field, Monmouth showed a lot of discipline with the ball.

Opening bowler Patrick Stubbs bowled three economical overs, while William Tatham picked up two wickets in an over. Hattie Brennan also grabbed a wicket, but Monmouth found the going tough against an energetic home side.

Too many chances were missed though and Colwall eventually posted 318. Skipper Sam Brennan and Vena Rose Saunders got Monmouth's reply off to a flying start with another good stand, but wickets then began to fall at regular intervals.

William Wilton counter attacked in style, then a flurry of boundaries and an effective innings from Lauren Maguire gave Monmouth hope.

Despite an aggressive knock from Anna Vines though, Monmouth's total of 273 fell short of what was needed. Monmouth, sponsored by Ancre Hill Vineyards, host second placed Wormelow at the Sports Ground next Sunday.
