DESPITE East Gwent Senior League Division 1 leaders Sudbrook winning again, second-placed Mathern A know they can still have a big say in the destination of the title this season.

They continued their campaign with a 2-1 win over Thornwell, played on the pitch at Chepstow Leisure Centre as their own pitch was declared unfit.

"It was a typical derby game," said Mathern boss Lee Baker after seeing Jordan Barrett and Ryan Guscott score.

"It was scrappy at times although there was a lot of commitment from both sides.

"We played football where we could but it was hard on a boggy pitch, Thornwell made it difficult for us by battling very strongly, but we had the quality to get through.

"It wasn't our best performance but all that matters is the three points and there's still pressure on the teams around us, because we have nothing to lose."

In Division 2, Underwood B won 5-3 at Caldicot Castle B and Mathern B won 7-0 at Severn Tunnel C.

Like Baker, Underwood's manager Craig Johnson said the match was scrappy.

"The pitch looked more like a ploughed field," he said.

"But fair play to Castle, they gave us a really good game which looked like it could have gone either way at half time."

Underwood's scorers were Matthew Seabourne (2), Jamie Richardson (2) and Keiron Gettings.

Mathern's goals came from Sam Davies (2), Luke Farley (2), Oli Aleman, Ieuan Diyaolu and Gareth Moore.

"Everyone played really well," said Davies who was named man of the match in the absence of manager Gary Burchill.
