THE RUN and Become Rose Inn race, organised by Chepstow Harriers, took place in Redwick on Tuesday 10th June with 110 competitors braving the elements. The race, consisting of a two-lap, four mile, flat course on the road, allows competitors the opportunity of running impressively quick times. At the sharp end, the race is fiercely competitive, with runners travelling from the top running clubs in Cardiff and Newport. Tuesday's race was the second in a series of four, each a month apart, and all following the same course. Runners therefore have plenty of chance to improve their times at each race. All runners are rewarded with a free beer or soft drink after the race. Conditions were not favourable as the heavens opened early on in the race, and persisted until after the runners finished. The runners were not deterred, and very speedy times were clocked by the front-leaders. At the middle and lower ends of the field plenty of competitors were thrilled to clock personal best times. The top three winners on the night were Stephen Mitchell from Cardiff Met AC in a staggeringly quick time of 19 minutes, 24 seconds, Matt Collins from Mic Morris Running Team in 20.29, and James Thie from Cardiff AAC in 20.35. The top three women were Clara Evans from Pontypridd Roadent in 23.35, Emma Wookey from Lliswerry Runners in 23.55, and Nicola Gething from Parc Bryn Bach in 25.13. The Race Director Judith Austerberry said: "I was delighted with how smoothly the event went and the number of people who were prepared to turn out in the inclement weather. "The winners were flying. With two races to go, excitement is mounting to see who will win the series overall." The next Run and Become Rose Inn race takes place on Tuesday 8th July at 7.30 pm. The final race in the series is on Tuesday 12th August and prizes will be awarded to the winners based on their best performance from three out of the four races.
