Monmouth Town's Under 12s suffered a narrow extra-time defeat to Mardy in a cup game last week.

After a heavy loss to Mardy earlier in the season, the boys knew it would be a tough game.

The game was a battle to say the least. Mardy scored two early on, Ben Hopkins pulled a goal back, but Mardy scored again to make it 3-1 at half time.

A stern talking to from coach P Perrella helped restore some self belief to the players.

Monmouth never gave up and another goal from Ben Hopkins, breaking through the defence, an own goal and a goal from Sam Cooke after a scramble in the Mardy box saw Monmouth take a 4-3 lead, but Mardy equalised to send the game into extra-time.

Ben Davies was keeping Monmouth in the game with some fine saves, along with the defence of J Lawson, T Haycock, A Morgan and M Terrell making plenty of tackles and giving their all, Sam Cooke and H Newell breaking up Mardy attacks and giving the ball to Ben Hopkins in his free role to run with the ball and attack the Mardy defence at every opportunity, along with J Perrella up front, who never stopped running.

Monmouth took the lead in extra-time after J Perrella poked the ball home.

However it was heartbreak for the Monmouth players as Mardy scored twice in the last five minutes, with nothing the excellent Ben Davies in goal could do.

Mardy won the game 6-5. With extra-time and no subs, the Monmouth players gave their all but it was just too much for them.
