South East Wales Cricket League Division One - Sudbrook CC First XI (217-9) beat Radyr CC First XI (156 all out) by 61 runs
A SPARKLING century by Ross Lewis was hailed as “one of the best ever” by skipper Micky Martin as Sudbrook won easily at Radyr.
“Ross and I have played together since we were kids but his century was one of the best I’ve seen by him,” an elated Martin said later.
“It was the main factor in our victory, without doubt,” he added.
On a hot day, Radyr’s pitch was very dry and after Martin won the toss he decided Sudbrook would bat first.
Lewis appeared to be in the mood and was striking the ball really well but lost partners until Matt Spencer joined him at the crease and the pair saw Sudbrook through to set Radyr a target of 218.
“It was a competitive score on that wicket with the spinners we had in the side,” Martin added.
“We opened up with Mitch Slape and Ben Supple this week and it paid off.
“It was the best spell I have seen from Mitch this year. He was quick and on the money and we had them four down in the first eight overs, three for Mitch and one for Ben.”
Martin then turned to spin bowler Dean Wallace and was rewarded almost immediately.
“We call Dean the White Wizard and he cast a spell on the Radyr batsman bowling 10 overs and taking two wickets for 11 runs,” the skipper explained.
“It was great to watch. Everyone else who bowled picked up a wicket and did their job brilliantly.
“It was another great team performance and gives us good momentum going into the big game against Chepstow this Saturday.”
Blackwood loss sets up vital league scrap
Chepstow CC First XI (201 all out) lost to Blackwood Town CC First XI (245-9) by 44 runs
AFTER looking likely to retain their Division One title earlier in the season, Chepstow slumped to another defeat at Mathern Road on Saturday against Blackwood Town.
They now face a tough task at Sudbrook this weekend if they are to haul themselves back up the table, especially as their hosts are still not clear of relegation themselves and will be looking for an important victory as well as local bragging rights.
