A TALENTED youngster has won a top accolade in Monmouth Cricket Club’s newly-established girls’ squad.

Overmonnow Primary pupil Eloise Hurd is a superb bowler and a solid fielder, who has been working very hard on her batting.

She won the coaches Player-of-the-season Award in recognition of the dedication the she has put into all aspects of her game, and is among five girls being put forward by the club for South East Wales Pathway trials this autumn.

Eloise is also taking on the role of sports ambassador at her school and is hoping to get more girls involved in cricket.

It is an exciting time for girls’ cricket in Monmouth, following the launch of this section in 2022.

New players to the game joined the girls’ squad alongside established players in the club’s under-9 to under-13 junior teams.

The girls attended weekly training at Monmouth Sports Ground run by female level 1 and 2 coaches, where they learned and improved their batting, bowling and fielding skills.

The coaching team of Lauren Maguire, Bea Jones, Jill Jones and Helen McGloin congratulated the whole squad for their achievements this year.

And they are looking forward to welcoming the girls back to the club next season. Any girls wishing to join should contact Helen and Jill by emailing: [email protected]

Meanwhile, the club’s senior male and female players are looking forward to playing indoor league cricket during the winter.

The club are also inviting all past, present and prospective members to their annual general meeting at Monmouth Rugby Club on Monday, October 17, at 7pm.
