THIS years Wales Rally GB will yet again provide a fitting finale to the FIA World Rally Championship next month.

With the drivers title safely tucked away for the third time for Sebastian Ogier, and the all conquering Volkswagen team claiming the manufacturers title, the final round in Wales should prove a very intriguing battle with the runners up spot in the manufacturers championship still wide open.

Britain’s top two drivers are returning to form coming into Wales Rally GB, with Welshman Elfyn Evans and Citroen’s Kris Meeke fresh from second and fourth overall on last weekend’s Tour de Corse.

For Evans it was a fantastic result in the M-Sport Fiesta WRC, his best ever WRC finish and the highest ever finish for a Welsh driver on a WRC event. He will carry the hopes of a nation into the tough three day event.

Both Evans and Meeke will be hoping to be in the mix for honours come the Sunday afternoon, and on current form neither driver should be ruled out.

This year’s rally follows a similar format to the highly successful 2014 event, which saw a huge increase in spectator numbers follow the rally on some of the best gravel roads in world rallying.

After the ceremonial start in Llandudno, the Welsh forest will reverberate to the sounds of a host of rally cars driven by the worlds best over three tough days.

Day one will see 132 kilometres of action, with two loops of three stages interspersed with a regroup and tyre fitting zone in Newtown.

Saturday, day two, is the event’s longest day with 143 kilometres of fast and furious action with the event moving in to the forests of Dyfi Forest complex for the two opening stages. After a re-group in Corris and refuel, these two will be tackled again, before the cars head north for 19 kilometres of the fast Dyfnant forest, followed by the narrow tracks of Aberhirnant. The event will then move on to the spectator stage held in the beautiful surroundings of Chirk Castle. From here crews will head for a well earned service back on Deeside after a very tough 7 stages.

Sunday’s day three in comparison is a sprint with only 33 kilometres of action, but is no less demanding with the opening two tests in Brenig and Alwen in the Clocaenog forest complex.

After a re-group in Llandudno the rally’s finale takes place over 11 kilometres of the earlier run Brenig test and the power stage before the Deeside finish on Sunday afternoon.

As well as Elfyn Evans, other Welsh interest will follow the likes of other top drivers Tom Cave, Osian Pryce and Aberdare based James Morgan who has been co-driving Estonian Sander Parm in a D-Mack Tyres Ford Fiesta R5 in the WRC 2 campaign.

Running in between the two loops of the WRC event is the very popular Network Q National Rally, with the 85 allotted entries were filled with a few hours of regulations becoming available. Local crews already assured of an entry are Spencer Price and Chris Hands in a Landrover Freelander, along with Bob Morgan and Ade Williams in their Skoda Fabia.
