Following two recent wins against top-of-the-league teams, Monmouth Youth were looking for their third scalp in as many weeks.
Bedwas Youth, who Monmouth beat earlier in the season in a close game, were the visitors and everyone was expecting a much closer game this time round, especially with a new-look Bedwas team emerging from the team bus.
And so it was, in the early exchanges, with once again Monmouth giving away too many penalties and conceding ground in a swirling breeze.
After 15 minutes Monmouth had a number of phases of play, deep in the oppositions half and through the hands it went, down the blindside, with Liam Musselbrook driving over with plenty of Monmouth forwards in support only to be judged 'held up' by the referee.
This passage of play galvanised the Monmouth team and after taking a scrum against the head, through pressure by the Monmouth scrum Dan White, the ball was passed through the fly half Ted Senior to inside centre Jordan Howells to score under the posts.
This was to be the first of four tries for Howells (pictured). The try was duly converted.
The second coming from a five yard penalty, from the opposition's try line, which went through a number of Monmouth hands for Howells to score on the left side of the posts.
The third try came from a Monmouth scrum on the half way line, picked by No 8 Cameron Boycott, passed to scrum half by Dan White, onto fly half Senior, who then passed to Howells to score a very well worked try.
From the ensuing kick off, which was caught superbly by Monmouth captain Tom Green, the Bedwas No 8 tackled awkwardly, leaving him concussed for many minutes. The referee called half-time and the ambulance was duly called by the paramedics.
The game was moved from the Sports Ground to the more familiar Chippenham Fields.
It was always going to be a question of whether the Bedwas team could raise their game and score early but this wasn't to be the case as from the kick off, the Monmouth winger Rhys Jones caught the ball and then ran through three Bedwas players to score a good solo try.
Four further Monmouth tries came in quick succession with the pick of those coming from turnover ball won by the ever present Monmouth flanker Adam Wheeler tackling the Bedwas No 8, winning the ball in the tackle, passing in one movement to the Monmouth centre who then fed Rhys Jones to score a good try on the left wing.
This move and score summed up the Monmouth performance and with the score moving over the 50 point mark the referee duly called a halt to the game, with still nine minutes to go.
Final Score Monmouth Youth 56, Bedwas Youth nil.
Monmouth entertain Caerleon/ St Josephs in the Gwent Cup next week, away, kick off at 2.30pm and all support is welcome.
