Chepstow Cricket Club crashed out of the Welsh Cup at home to Premier League side Newport in a low scoring affair. Lewis Coates' excellent innings of 53 not out guided the visitors to a hard-fought six-wicket victory at Mathern Road. Chepstow will reflect on the defeat with bitter disappointment having been bowled out for only 132 in 33.3 overs. It is a crime for any team to not bat their full allocation of overs, especially as an extra 20-30 runs on the Chepstow total could have made the Newport run chase particularly difficult. The slowness of the Chepstow wicket and heavy outfield contributed to difficult scoring, however the batters only had themselves to blame after collapsing from 69-1. It is a worry for Chepstow that not one of the top four could pass 30 runs. Left arm spinner Max Scarr bowled with great control in taking 3-32 and Newport must be praised for setting excellent fields. The shot selection of Dobbie, Franklin, Monk and Jones contributed to a middle order collapse that could not be rectified. At times Newport looked to be treading water in their reply as Chepstow led by skipper Dobbie bowled tight lines. When Newport captain Michael Claydon was dismissed, caught well by Rayner, Chepstow were certainly in the game. With Newport teetering at 51-3 a cool head was needed to calm the nerves and Coates provided stability in fine style. He batted with authority and didn't allow young spinner Josh Tregaskas to settle into a rhythm. The visitors reached their target with 8.2 overs to spare despite a spirited Chepstow fielding display. The defeat leaves Chepstow to concentrate on their league ambitions with an away trip to Pontypridd next Saturday.
