On Saturday (16th February), Chepstow Ladies took on Whitchurch away.

With a very early start, Chepstow turned to 'Eye of the Tiger' for pre-game motivation and stepped onto the pitch with purpose.

Whitchurch pushed back and moved the ball around gaining ground. Chepstow intercepted and drove the ball towards Whitchurch's defence without result.

Both sides had speed and width as play continued going end-to-end with some narrowly-missed attempts.

Whitchurch were awarded a short corner that Chepstow defended well but a decisive interception from Whitchurch allowed them a direct strike, which they converted.

Both sides began the second half strongly with play moving from end to end. Whitchurch took possession and had another attempt cleared by keeper Brodie Knox and her defence.

Chepstow responded with grit and determination, backed by a vocal away following.

Chepstow used zonal play for one-twos to work the ball towards goal. Another narrow miss but Chepstow intercepted Whitchurch's hit-out and kept applying the pressure.

As Whitchurch broke through with a counter-attack, Chepstow stepped up to defend and feed the forwards the ball.

Chepstow drove towards goal and a strike by Hannah Moore was put away by Anna Mayo on the left post.

Fuelled with energy, Chepstow's solid defence continued intercepting some sharp attacking play from Whitchurch.

Chepstow took possession and used width to drive at goal. The forwards worked the ball into the D and Wendy Eburne cracked a shot for Jamie Clifton to one-handedly lift past the skilled keeper into the net to put Chepstow 2-1 up.

Whitchurch's momentum wained as Chepstow's stepped up a notch.

Whitchuch drove at goal only to be denied by Chepstow, who cleared the ball back up the pitch. With swift movement, Chepstow worked the ball at goal for a strike to be converted by Clifton but questionably disallowed.

With minutes left on the clock, both sides fought for opportunities as the final whistle blew. A crucial 2-1 win for Chepstow Ladies puts just one point between the relegation zone and safety with one game in hand.

Chepstow Ladies is a long established hockey club currently looking for new members.

Training is at Chepstow Leisure Centre Astro on Thursdays 7pm to 8pm for players aged 14 upwards.
