Chepstow Ladies' 2-0 win over Penarth III last Saturday (16th March) was very much a family affair.

The ladies had only eight players available the night before the game so goalkeeper Brodie Knox enlisted the help of younger sister Rosie and grandma Pat Morris, a former Chepstow player and current umpire celebrating her 50th year with the club.

Being low on numbers again, Chepstow Ladies set out to focus on possession and formation to keep as much strength as possible.

Penarth III showed their skill with slick movement in attack. Claire Clarke, Mary Baker, Kate McKoy and keeper Brodie Knox worked continuously in defense to close down Penarth and deliver the ball back out to midfield.

Chepstow brought the ball back up the pitch with pace via Rosie Knox and Hilary Baker to be intercepted by Penarth.

Penarth were back on the attack, using their skillful left winger to break. It was no match for Clarke, though, who cleanly stole the ball switching it centre to McKoy then Hannah Moore, who gained significant ground with Pat Morris up front drawing the defenders.

Morris got a shot straight on the keeper's pads but was fouled on her rebound preventing a conversion.

Penarth's determination was causing them to foul and allowed Chepstow to compose themselves more on the ball.

It was 0-0 at half-time and Chepstow Ladies were buzzing with a renewed sense of energy.

Morris pushed back to Moore who slipped it left to Williams. Moore picked up a run on ball and drove towards goal as Penarth took a tackle.

Their counter attack was intercepted by McKoy, who switched play right to Knox and Baker.

Chepstow were working hard to get a goal opportunity. Mary Baker's free hit in left defence was picked up by Ellie Thomas in left midfield and fed to McKoy then onto Moore.

Chepstow were gaining ground fast as the ball was passed to Williams outside the D and taken round a defender to score. 1-0 up and Chepstow were supercharged.

Penarth hit back hard with both sides battling for possession. Chepstow worked tirelessly to deny Penarth's attempts with great saves from Knox and interceptions from defence.

Chepstow capitalised on Penarth's frustration to get two short corners, Moore's strike on the first was narrowly missed.

Penarth weren't as quick on the second as Morris's slick injection allowed Williams to put away Chepstow's second goal of the game.

With 10 minutes left on the clock Penarth piled on pressure and took several more opportunities but Chepstow held strong to the whistle to win 2-0.

Chepstow Ladies were euphoric to have again beaten all the odds and played phenomenally well.

This unexpected win against a solid mid-table team puts them three points above Cardiff Athletic III, who they take on at home on 13th April, their penultimate game of the season.
