SPECTATORS at Chepstow Racecourse last Thursday (21st November) would have been forgiven for thinking they had seen a mirage appear before them, as a lineup of camels replaced their finer counterparts for a series of races on the famous track.
The William Hill Camel Derby saw two races between the lumbering desert dwellers climax with an exciting grand final, raising money for Bristol-based charity Paul's Place.
The charity raises money to provide care and support to adults with learning difficulties. After an enormous effort from organisers, the racecourse, and camel owners Joseph's Amazing Camels, a staggering £40,000 has been raised for the charity.
Paul's Place is planning to use this money to continue its work helping disabled adults achieve. They fund huge transport costs for holidays, trips to the gym, birthday parties and sports.
Celebrity faces taking part in the event included At the Races presenter Matt Chapman, and British eventer Laura Collett. The champion on the day however, was jockey Charlie Hancock (pictured below left) riding camel Sahara.
Event organiser and charity trustee Laura Day said: "I was absolutely dumstruck at the brilliant support from the media and the public.
"I didn't realise it was going to work so well. We aimed for £25,000 and just couldn't believe the final total. Paul's Place is so grateful to so many people."
Support from Chepstow Racecourse, jockey sponsorship and an auction helped push up the total amount raised. Prizes in the auction included a year's free training with renowned race horse trainer Graeme McPherson.
Don't get the hump if you missed the event, as organisers have admitted to considering making the race an annual event.
