CHEPSTOW Boxing Club members showed neat footwork as they raised sponsorship at the third Cornfield Project Fun Run in Portskewett on Sunday.

12 youngsters delighted their coaches and supporters as they all registered top-20 finishes.

The club’s head coach Steve Woods explained the young boxers were running to raise much-needed funds so five of them can take part in a prestigious boxing tournament in Hull next month.

“We have some sponsorship but there is still a lot we need to raise ourselves,” Steve explained later.

“The lads who ran today have seven titles and two Great Britain bronze medals between them and they will gain great experience at the Hull event which is attracting competitors from all over the world – including Australia.

“Taking part in fundraising events like this teaches the lads that they can help their club and their teammates.”

The Fun Run attracted its biggest entry to date as more organisations and clubs used it as a way of raising funds for their club or charity.

At the same time their entry fee enables the Project committee to continue its work, improving leisure and sporting amenities in Portskewett.

With reigning champion Richard Lund unable to defend his title, it was passed to Caldicot’s Lee Kiely who used the event as a training run before taking on next weekend’s Bristol 10K.

“I enter running events every month and ran seven half marathons last year and thought this would be a good work-out before Bristol,” he said after receiving his trophy from ex-Wales international footballer Nathan Blake.

He was followed across the line by boxer Luke Conner, 14, who had been unable to train for the event because of an ankle injury.

The women’s race was won by Donna Hayward of Caldicot who said she was surprised but delighted to have won.

“I’m not a member of a running club but maybe I should think about joining one,” Donna said after being presented with her trophy by Nathan Blake.

In the juniors race around the cornfield, 11-year-old boxer Codi Leamon was first across the line with Lois Codling – “nearly seven” – the first girl.
