A TALENTED teen athlete showed a real head for heights as he leapt to silver and third place in the national rankings at a major event.
Fifteen-year-old Monmouth School for Boys student Aharon Graham-Mulvaney also achieved a new PB of 3m 85cm in the boys’ U17 pole vault final at the England Athletics Age Group Indoor Championships.
It was an exciting weekend for the Year 11 student, who finished runner-up on a count-back, and is now third overall in the UK event rankings for his age group.
Qualification for the competition was tough, with the PB entry standard set at 3m 70cm and the starting height on the day, 3m 30cm.
Aharon competed among the best U17 pole-vaulters in the nation and cleared the 3m 30cm bar on his first attempt.
He then cleared the next two bars (3m 50cm and 3m 70cm) on his second attempts.
Aharon was thriving under pressure and revelling in the atmosphere and achieved a new PB of 3m 85cm on his first attempt, which proved significant.
With just four athletes left in the competition, the bar height was raised to 4m and only one cleared it to seal first place.
Aharon was awarded the silver medal for his 3m 85cm clearance on a count-back, as he was the only athlete who cleared the height on the first attempt.
