Monmouth Town Football Club Academy teams played their first league game of the season at home to Afan Lido at the weekend.

This was a big ask for most of the boys, particularly in the under 12s and 14s as the Welsh Academy League is new to these boys.

A brace for James Obern was not quite enough for the Under 16s as a last minute goal for Afan saw Monmouth lose 3-2.

The goal was fiercely contested by the Monmouth players, as the linesman had his flag up for offside, but the goal was given.

There was better news for the under 12s, who won 8-1m and the under 14s, where their 10-man team saw them to a well deserved 4-2 win.

Coach Mark Catlin was extremely pleased with these results.

Compared to last year, this is a vast improvement results-wise.

The next game in two weeks' time, sees Monmouth travel to Llanelli, who like Afan are another Welsh Premiership club.
