A largely inexperienced Monmouth side took on the Cwmbran U11's on Sunday at Chippenham Fields.
With several starting positions given to the most inexperienced squad members, the scene was set to see if the commitment shown in training could be transferred into a game situation.
From the kick off, Monmouth were immediately under pressure. Cwmbran kicked into space and collected the kick off to set up a series of driving phases which resulted in one of their large forwards going over for the first try of the game.
This was the wake up call the Monmouth boys needed. Led by the rampaging Morgen Jeffs at forward, who regularly made the hard yards getting over the gain line, Monmouth started winning their fair share of possession.
With pace behind the scrum, it was not long before Monmouth were on level terms. Centre George Burnett bursting through the Cwmbran defence to score an excellent try.
The Monmouth boys were now getting on top of their opposition and further tries followed.
An individual effort by Jamie Norman was quickly followed by a searing break from Charlie Gowling who held off two defenders before touching down.
Cwmbran were showing great commitment and added their second score as the Monmouth boys held off their tackles, allowing the big Cwmbran forwards to get over the try line after a series of powerful bursts.
Another fine effort by fly half Jamie Norman gave Monmouth a deserved 20-10 lead going into half time.
The Monmouth boys started to come together in the second half, with forwards and backs linking well to produce some excellent rugby.
A series of forward drives took play to the halfway line and excellent passing by the backs released wing Henry Lee, who rounded the covering defence for the first score of the half. Henry quickly added his second with a carbon copy of his first, again rounding the defence from long range to finish with an excellent brace of tries.
Cwmbran rallied briefly to score their only try of the half, but Monmouth had found their stride and scored the try of the match from long range.
Nick Perret Green started the offensive with a powerful drive out of the home 22. Excellent recycling and the ball reached George Burnett who beat several defenders before feeding fellow centre Hywel Rose who sped for the corner.
A beautiful over head pass to Jamie Norman gave the fly half the simplest of runs to complete his hat trick and a memorable try.
Substitute Owen Hughes completed the scoring with the final play of the game with a barnstorming run from twenty metres. An excellent performance from the Monmouth boys recorded a final score of 40-15.
