Newland Parish Council called a meeting of Parish and Community Councils bordering the A466 between Chepstow and Monmouth to discuss common problems associated with landslips along the road on both sides of the river.

The meeting discussed in broad terms what problems were brought to the various communities when the road was closed and how it was perceived that they may be solved or better managed.

It was agreed that the effects of the closure of the road were felt throughout most of the communities along the river and away from it as traffic was diverted around the blockage.

The stated intention of the meeting was to bring all agencies together to acknowledge their various responsibilities and act upon them - these will include the highway authorities in Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire, the Woodland Trust, Forestry Commission and other landowners.  It is the intention to invite these various organisations to future meetings.

"Ultimately, the Parish and Community Councils are seeking a long term, co-ordinated, joined up pro active strategy for the proper management of the land and trees along the road" said Parish Clerk, Richard Crighton.
