Work began on demolition of the modern extensions to the old Monmouth Hospital on Hereford Road this week. Owners of the site, Redcliffe Homes also have the now completely demolished site of the former Dixton Clinic. Architects were appointed in 2008 to design a new residential scheme on the site of the former cottage hospital. The original plan was for conversion of the building into apartments and additional housing on the site, but was refused as the county council was against the proposed eight town houses planned for the site. Redcliffe Homes appealed against the decision and that was also dismissed. The current plan for demolition of the buildings to make way for a proposed block of 21 apartments and four 4-bed houses to the rear of the site is against officer advice as they do not consider demolition as an option. The building was not listed by CADW as they felt that the building was not of any significant architectural value and has been spoiled by more recent alterations and additions which have now been demolished. The 2010 application lodged with Monmouthshire County Council's planning department, DC/2010/00435, is still to be decided. But in more recent correspondence with Monmouthhsire County Council, CADW have accepted that the building is an example of one of the few surviving cottage hospitals with some redeeming architectural qualities.
