SIR,
There is a real danger that this year's May Fair in Monmouth could be the last unless the county council allows it back onto the car park near Monnow Bridge.
That is where the fun fair always used to be held, until several years ago when the county council moved it to Vauxhall Fields.
There it has been dying a slow death of poor attendances because of its remoteness.
Apparently the decision on whether it is allowed back onto the car park lies with the Car Parking Section of the county council. That cannot be right.
This matter vitally affects our young people and it is not something that should be decided by officials who may be expected to favour cars before people.
If you agree the fun fair should be allowed back into town, please write to the Beacon to say so.
Please also write to your town and county councillors to tell them how important it is to keep these traditions going in our town.
An historic element of our town's community life is at stake.
In case anyone thinks I am being a 'nimby', let me say we will be very sorry to lose the fun fair as 'neighbours'.
Danter's fair (which comes from Swansea and has no connection with the Danters of Symonds Yat) has become our good friend over the years.
The proprietors Denzil and Hayley Danter and their staff have always been unfailingly responsible, reliable and friendly and kept good order.
They bring a real asset to the town but unless we make our voices heard we could so easily lose our May Fair.
Charles Boase
