MADAM,

I see that David Davies has been at it again. This time with his disturbing statements in connection with child migrants, which have generated a social media ‘storm,’ and thankfully, much derision.

Instead of pressing his government to speed up the admission to Britain of desperate, vulnerable children, in line with the ‘Dubs amendment’ to the 2016 Immigration Act, he chooses to quibble about eligibility.

He has extensive history of expressing his views under a veil of reasonableness, which he hopes will be seen through.

I have always wondered whose opinions he represents, beyond his own.

Having lived in Monmouthshire for many years, I have always found people to be very fair minded, compassionate and liberal in their social views. To its credit, our council has readily accepted Syrian refugee families.

His, albeit surprising in my view, electoral mandate does not give him license to express his distasteful views as ‘MP for Monmouth’.

This sort of populist, ’dog whistle’ politics heaps opprobrium on him and does us absolutely no service.
