MADAM,

Mr David T C Davies MP would do well to take a few moments to consider what he would do if he and his family had to flee their country in fear of their lives, with no knowledge of when they might be able to return home.

Would he take his family to a refugee camp, where they could remain for years, with no chance of re-settlement or the opportunity to continue with their lives?

Or would he attempt, against the odds, to get them to a safe and stable country where they could begin to rebuild their lives together? And if he alone managed to escape, would he be content to abandon his family to their fate, or would he make every effort to bring them to join him in a place of safety?

It is a false assumption that people who make it as far as Calais can not be seeking asylum. And to suggest that people seeking asylum in Europe should do so in the first countries they come to simply shifts the entire responsibility to Italy and Greece.

The callous and fear-mongering tone of Mr Davies’ letter is appalling.
